The Fourtune Quartet aims to explore the connection between sounds and emotion.

Saxophonist Toby Barrett has worked on a series of compositions experimenting with minimalist techniques aimed to evoke emotional responses, focusing on melancholy. Alongside these originals, the quartet will be playing modern jazz tunes by artists that inspire the band such as Walter Smith III, Tigran Hamasyan, Matt Carmichael and the distinctive sound of ECM records. After spending the last few years studying jazz at Auckland University, the Fourtunes are excited to make an appearance at the Wellington Jazz Festival for the first time.

“Music should be about deep breathing and close listening. You should lead and follow at the same time, share the space and let the music carry you. It’s not about demonstrating your instrumental virtuosity as much as it’s about the art of improvising, being in the moment and really present with the music”. - Joe Lovano

Toby Barrett - tenor saxophone
Michael Nash - piano
Tyler Diprose - double Bass
Finn McNeill - drums
