Acoustic originals: Lyrical instrumentals and songs for cyclone fundraiser

Music for Mohaka sprang from a desire to help those affected by Cyclone Gabrielle. Mohaka is a small settlement 20 kilometres south of Wairoa. All proceeds go to the Mohaka marae, a vital hub for distribution of supplies and a symbol of the community's strength during and after this tragic event.

Pianist, artist and composer Ian Logan - whose grandfather came from Mohaka - blends Blues, Jazz and his Celtic roots in evocative acoustic piano with covers and originals. His diverse career includes performing in Parisian and London venues, as well as back in Aotearoa. Joining him is the dynamic bassist Deme Blades with young drummer James Punter completing the trio.

Encouraging creatives is part of Ian Logan’s DNA, and he has invited along musical friends to this show, including Hanne Jøstensen, a Wellington based Norwegian singer-songwriter. Hanne writes primarily in English, but includes Norwegian songs. She recently performed her songs to her own tūrangawaewae, a tiny, remote, lighthouse island off the north-west coast of Norway. Expect an intimate solo-set from Hanne with carefully crafted lyrics that balance the personal and local with the universal.

Refreshments are offered in the break with original artwork on view as well.
