Fairies, forests, a full moon, silhouettes of old spirits. A surreal landscape with jazz and classical influences.

Tyaan Singh is a Pōneke based saxophone player and composer with an affinity for surreal and emotionally immersive music. His new album Imaginary Friends (to be recorded September 2024) delves into the internal world where creation and perception merge, and the subconscious takes form.

The writing process for Imaginary Friends was inspired by therapeutic visualisation techniques, such as having conversations with younger versions of yourself, or developing an imagined character to be your protector. Each song on the album was written to define a character (an imaginary friend): a part of the self, or something that the self needs or wants to be.

The music draws from a range of influences including orchestral music, string quartets and jazz trio.

Tyaan (alto saxophone) will be joined by some of his favourite Wellington musicians:

Louisa Williamson - saxophone
Hayden Afele-Nickel - violin
Callum Allardice - guitar
Seth Boy - bass
Shaun Anderson - drums.
