On Tuesday, 10 December, the Wellington Jazz Cooperative will host American bassist Gene Perla in a recreation of the 1972 Elvin Jones album Live at The Lighthouse.

Originally recorded at the Lighthouse Café in Hermosa Beach, California, this album became a seminal post-Coltrane classic, showcasing a powerhouse lineup of Elvin Jones, David Liebman, Steve Grossman, and Gene Perla. Now, over 50 years later, we have the chance to experience these timeless tunes performed live by the original bassist, Gene Perla, alongside an exceptional lineup of international and local talent.

On tenor and soprano saxophones is Andy Sugg, one of Australia’s leading saxophonists. Based in Melbourne, Andy is renowned for his fusion of jazz and popular styles. A seasoned bandleader, educator, and author, he brings a deep understanding of Coltrane’s legacy to this performance.

Joining him on tenor saxophone is Roger Manins. Based in Auckland, Roger’s immense experience and distinctive style have earned him a reputation as one of the Southern Hemisphere’s foremost jazz saxophonists.

Rounding out this stellar ensemble are Wellington’s own Duncan Haynes on piano and Mark Lockett on drums, adding their artistry to what promises to be an unforgettable evening.

Don’t miss this unique opportunity to experience the magic of Live at The Lighthouse brought to life by one of its original creators and an outstanding lineup of talent.
